This is the only cover I've used, so I don't know how it compares to other brands. Also, my kids were 19 months and 3 years when we started cloth diapering, so I don't know how it would fit a smaller baby.
I originally bought one of these for my son to wear over his Gerber training pants. Once I got started with those, I was amazed at how not-that-hard it was to wash, etc. I was impressed by the fact that the training pants paired with the Flip made a huge difference in the rest of my laundry, due to fewer leaks at the waist and legs.
So, we bought a couple more of these (with the inserts) and a dozen flats for our toddler. I'm saving up now for more Flips! In disposable diapers, both of our kids used to leak onto their clothes every time they had a bm - either through the legs or up the back, depending on how I had fastened it. The only solution was to size up for a higher rise, but that only works to a certain point. I have never once had this kind of leaking happen in the Flip cover, no matter how big the mess or what "diaper" I'm using underneath. Even when I use a lower rise setting! That by itself sold me on cloth diapering. (the significant reduction in rash and knowing we will start saving money in another couple of months when my stash is complete are other nice things.)
I love that they fit both of the kids, so I can just have them share one set instead of buying two sizes. De facto, I have certain covers that are "assigned" to each kid, but in a pinch I can shuffle them.
The microfiber stay-dry inserts are great for certain jobs and not-so-great for others. They seem to stain more easily than the flats, and take several hours longer to dry (on the clothesline.) But that's because they hold quite a lot. I've had my 3-year-old heavy wetter wear one over night without saturating it. Also, as much as I really love my flats, my husband won't touch them . . . but he is OK with these. ("Wait, that's it? That's not hard!")
I''ve discovered I''m not a big fan of these types of systems. The inserts don''t do well with newborn poo at all which pretty much ruined the whole concept of having a cover you can use multiple times by replacing the insert. The cover does work very well for covering prefolds on a newborn though. I liked this system fairly well for my toddler but found that she soaked through the insert much faster than other diapers.
